dogo history

This breed originated from the province of Cordoba, located in the central area of Argentina. Its creator was Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez, a prominent physician and member of a traditional local family. In 1928, his passion for dogs, and probably the family heritage, sent him to set the foundation and setting the standards for the new race, which he called the Dogo Argentino. His work is based on methodical crossroads of several pure breeds with old fighting dog from Cordoba, who was very strong and vigorous but lacked psychic and genetic stability. This local race, the product of cross Mastiff, Bulldog and Bull Terrier, was widely known and appreciated by fervent dog lovers to fight, at that time a very popular activity that involved all social classes.

After a thorough and careful selection and study of character, through different generations, Dr. Nores Martinez obtained the first family to achieve its goal. In the beginning it was generally accepted as a dog in the fight, however, it loves to hunt so Dr. Nores Martinez took the dogs to one of his usual hunting expedition, where the new breed demonstrated its skills and became a key figure in all his trips. In this way, it soon became a great hunting dog. Eventually this allowed the dog a great versatility and made him a noble companion, faithful, peerless protector. His strength, endurance, keen sense of smell and bravery make it the best dog among those used for hunting wild boar, peccary (four-legged animals like pigs), pumas and other predators that can be found in the vast and heterogeneous areas of the Argentine territory. Its harmony, balance and excellent athletic muscles are ideal characteristics of the persistence of long journeys of various weather conditions, which follows fearless battle with the pursued prey.

On 21st May 1964 this race was recognized by the Federation Cynological of Argentina and the Argentine Rural Society, and registered in the minutes of the origin of dogs. It was only on 31st July in 1973. That it was accepted by the International Federation cynological as the first and only Argentinean breed, thanks to the work and effort of Dr. Augustin Nores Martinez, its creator and successor.
